City Water System Recovers After Service Disruption

The Truth or Consequences water system has returned to normal operations after a failed pump and a main water line break forced the city to declare a brief water emergency on Monday, Aug. 31, according to City Manager Gary Whitehead.

Although the shutoff was ordered citywide, only a small number of customers lost water service or experienced low water pressure. The conservation alert was lifted Monday, Sept. 7.

Officials said the newly installed pump at Well No. 6 is operating well and the upper-zone tanks are refilling quickly. On Tuesday, the larger tank’s water level measured between 18 and 19 feet, compared with 4 feet the previous week, indicating a substantial recovery in stored water.

Construction crews around the city paused digging for a week to reduce the risk of additional line breaks, focusing instead on surface work. Digging has since resumed.

“Thanks to the community for its patience and understanding,” Whitehead said. “We’ve learned a lot about our water system and what it takes to keep it running. We will continue improving our communication with the public to avoid confusion or misunderstandings.”
