Business Registration in Truth or Consequences
Starting a new business in Truth or Consequences begins with completing the official Business Registration Form, also available from the City Clerk’s Office. To fill out this form, you’ll need a New Mexico Tax ID number, also known as a CRS, BTIN, or GRT number. If you don’t yet have one, you can obtain it through the State of New Mexico’s Taxpayer Access Point. Instructions for obtaining your CRS number are available through that portal.
Submitting Your Registration
Once your form is complete, please bring it to the City Clerk’s Office at 505 Sims Street, Truth or Consequences, NM 87901. Your application will be reviewed by the Designated Zoning Official, who will assess the proposed business location for zoning compliance and suitability. If you’re opening a home-based business, nearby residents may be notified as part of the review process.
After your registration is approved, the City Clerk’s Office will contact you to pay the $35 registration fee (accepted by Cash, Check, or Money Order only). Your business certificate will then be issued. Please note: registrations are not prorated and expire annually on December 31. Renewal is required each year.
Business Relocation
If your business moves to a new location, notify the Planning & Zoning Office at 401 McAdoo Street so they can review and approve the new site. Once approved, visit the City Clerk’s Office to update your business records and ensure future renewal notices are sent to the correct address.
Annual Renewal
Each December, the City Clerk’s Office will mail a renewal form to the registered business address. To renew, simply complete the form and return it with the $35 fee. If your registration is not renewed by March 15, it will be considered delinquent and subject to an additional fee.
