Tourism Helps Communities Build a Stronger Future

For communities working to strengthen their economies, tourism can offer more than a seasonal boost. For more than 20 years, Truth or Consequences, Elephant Butte and Sierra County have partnered with New Mexico-based Sunny 505 to connect the area’s attractions and cultural and natural assets with travelers’ interests. Founder Joanie Griffin reports that this year, “New Mexico is bucking the national trends.” Although travel costs are rising nationwide, visitation to the state is up.

“Tourism is the number two industry in our state after oil and gas,” Griffin states. “It generates lodgers’ tax and gross receipts tax revenue, which benefits everyone locally.” Visitor spending on lodging, food, transportation, crafts and local experiences circulates through the economy and benefits businesses beyond those that serve tourists directly. That activity can support a wide range of jobs, from skilled hospitality positions to opportunities for drivers, vendors and artisans.

Sunny 505 works closely with the New Mexico Tourism Department and its New Mexico True brand to promote the area through several channels. Advertising appears on streaming television, TikTok, Google, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. Each quarter, Instagram influencers feature local attractions in different seasons. The area is also promoted in the New Mexico True Adventure Guide, which is distributed in neighboring states; in Albuquerque and El Paso print media; and on billboards along I-25 north and south of the area.

Tourism can also benefit public services and infrastructure. Revenue generated by visitors may help support roads, utilities, health care and education. Improvements made for visitors, such as airports and public transportation, can also make everyday life easier for residents.

Tourism can also give communities a reason to preserve and celebrate what makes them distinctive. Visitors often seek authentic cultural experiences, creating greater interest in local festivals, traditional crafts, historic landmarks and heritage sites. Maintaining those traditions can strengthen local pride while passing community stories and skills to future generations.

Natural resources may benefit as well. When tourism is managed responsibly, visitor revenue can help fund conservation projects and environmental protection. Those investments can preserve the landscapes and attractions that draw travelers for years to come.

Success, however, depends on local involvement. Municipal leaders, businesses and residents must work together to ensure tourism reflects community priorities and that its economic benefits remain close to home. Thoughtful planning can help welcome first-time visitors while giving them reasons to return.

For a struggling community, tourism is not simply about attracting people from elsewhere. It can support economic survival, stronger public services, cultural vitality and local opportunity. When managed sustainably, tourism allows a community to share what it values while creating lasting benefits for the people who call it home.
