Worth the Wait: New Freightliner Truck to Bring Safer, More Reliable Waste Collection
The city’s long-awaited new Freightliner Refuse Truck has been moved to the 2028 production cycle following a strategic decision to protect the city’s cash position during the current fiscal year. Officials explained that the truck was originally slated for a 2027 build, but the city elected to delay the purchase order while closely monitoring available cash reserves and outstanding fleet expenditures. As a result, the city lost its original production slot and was required to place the order under the manufacturer’s 2028 build schedule. The shift to the newer model year increased the truck’s cost by approximately $9,000, bringing the total purchase price to about $394,000. Because $390,000 had already been budgeted, commissioners were asked to approve an additional $5,000 to complete the purchase.
City officials noted that the decision helped preserve financial flexibility while the city was still awaiting delivery of previously ordered equipment. Rather than committing additional funds before receiving that vehicle asset, the city chose to extend the purchase timeline, improving its cash position and reducing financial pressure during the fiscal year.
The outcome also provides an unexpected benefit: the city will now receive a newer model-year vehicle with updated specifications. The heavy-duty Freightliner Refuse Truck is designed specifically for refuse collection service and is expected to improve reliability, safety, and operational efficiency for sanitation crews while reducing maintenance demands on aging equipment.
Although delivery has been pushed back approximately one year, officials say the truck remains a key investment in the sanitation department's long-term fleet replacement program and will help ensure dependable waste collection services for residents well into the future.
