Wastewater
The Wastewater Division oversees operations at the wastewater treatment facility and sewer lift stations, as well as managing municipal production wells, pumping stations, and water tanks that supply potable water to the City.
The wastewater treatment facility processes an average of 700,000 to 800,000 gallons per day using an activated sludge system, effectively removing 97% of BOD and 94% of TSS. Treated effluent is either discharged into the Rio Grande River—exceeding state and federal quality standards—or used to irrigate the City's baseball and soccer fields, as well as the municipal golf course.
Biosolids are processed through a belt press system to produce Class A compost. Following state-approved testing, this compost is distributed to the community free of charge.
