A Brief History
The hot springs of Truth or Consequences have been used for generations, long before the town was established. By the early 1900s, the area known then as Hot Springs, New Mexico, developed into a thriving health‑resort community. Visitors traveled from across the country to “take the waters,” seeking relief from ailments and enjoying the therapeutic mineral baths. Between the 1910s and 1940s, dozens of bathhouses, hotels, and boarding houses were built around the springs. Many of these structures—constructed in Territorial, Pueblo Revival, and early 20th‑century commercial styles—still stand today. Their preservation gives the district its unique historic character. The City’s name changed to Truth or Consequences in 1950, but the bathhouse tradition continued, and the district remains one of the most intact historic hot‑spring areas in the United States.
The District Today
The Historic Bathhouse District is centered along Austin Street, Pershing Street, and the surrounding blocks near the Rio Grande. The area includes:
