Mud Mountain Trail
Mud Mountain Trail offers adventurous hikers a chance to explore the rugged desert landscape west of Truth or Consequences. Rising above the Rio Grande Valley near Williamsburg, the area features rocky hills, dramatic views, open desert terrain, and striking geological formations. While less developed than many area trails, Mud Mountain rewards visitors with solitude, expansive scenery, and a true backcountry experience.

What You'll See
The trail traverses classic Chihuahuan Desert terrain featuring rocky hillsides, desert grasses, native shrubs, ocotillo, and cactus. As elevation increases, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding basin, nearby mountain ranges, and the communities of Truth or Consequences and Williamsburg.
The area is also known locally for its limestone cliffs and unique rock formations. Wildlife sightings may include rabbits, lizards, raptors, and other desert species that thrive in this arid environment.
Getting There
From Interstate 25, take Exit 75 at Williamsburg and head toward the Sierra County Fairgrounds area. Access to Mud Mountain is typically gained via Mud Canyon Road west of Williamsburg. Visitors should be prepared for dirt roads and changing conditions, especially after storms. High-clearance vehicles may be beneficial for some access routes.
Hiker Tip
There is little to no shade along the route. Bring more water than you think you'll need, wear sturdy footwear, and avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day. Morning and evening hikes often provide the best temperatures and most dramatic views.
