Trails throughout the park pass through classic Chihuahuan Desert landscapes featuring volcanic hills, rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and native desert vegetation. Depending on the season and water levels, hikers may encounter waterfowl, shorebirds, rabbits, lizards, and other wildlife that utilize the reservoir and surrounding habitat.
Popular routes include shoreline trails, the Dirt Dam area, portions of the West Lakeshore Trail, and pathways connecting recreation areas throughout the park. Many sections offer panoramic views of Elephant Butte Lake, the Caballo Mountains, and the surrounding desert basin.
Getting There
Elephant Butte Lake State Park is located approximately seven miles north of Truth or Consequences. Multiple trail access points are available throughout the park, including areas near the Visitor Center, South Monticello Campground, Marina del Sur, and other recreation areas. State park entrance fees may apply.

Trail conditions can vary depending on lake levels and weather. Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy footwear, and take advantage of the cooler temperatures during morning and evening hours.
