Located within Elephant Butte Lake State Park, Rock Canyon Marina offers excellent opportunities for observing waterbirds, shorebirds, and desert wildlife along the shoreline of New Mexico's largest reservoir. The area's combination of open water, rocky coves, mudflats, and surrounding desert habitat attracts a wide variety of birds throughout the year, making it one of the most productive birding locations on Elephant Butte Lake. More than 170 species have been documented in the Rock Canyon area.

Visitors will find expansive lake views, rocky shorelines, open water, and adjacent desert habitat surrounding the marina and nearby coves. Water levels can vary significantly throughout the year, exposing shoreline areas and mudflats that attract migrating shorebirds and feeding waterfowl.
The combination of reservoir habitat and desert uplands creates opportunities to observe both aquatic and terrestrial bird species during a single visit. Birding can be productive from shoreline access points, marina areas, viewpoints, and nearby walking routes.

Winter (December-February)
Winter is often the most productive season for waterfowl viewing, with large concentrations of ducks, geese, grebes, pelicans, and other waterbirds present on the lake.
Best Time of Day
Early morning generally provides the best birding conditions, with calmer water, better lighting, and increased bird activity. Late afternoon can also be productive for observing waterbirds and raptors.
Getting There
Rock Canyon Marina is located within Elephant Butte Lake State Park near the City of Elephant Butte. Access is available via park roads leading to the marina and shoreline recreation areas. Visitors should follow all state park regulations and stay within designated public access areas. Entrance fees may apply.
Birding Tip
Bring binoculars or a spotting scope and spend time scanning the open water. Many of the area's most interesting species, including grebes, pelicans, ducks, gulls, and diving birds, are often found well offshore. Winter waterfowl concentrations can be especially impressive when reservoir conditions are favorable.
