What You'll See
The trail follows the Rio Grande through a lush corridor of mature cottonwoods, native vegetation, ponds, and wetland habitat. Visitors may encounter waterfowl, songbirds, turtles, rabbits, and other wildlife throughout the year.

Unlike many desert hikes in southern New Mexico, portions of the trail offer shade from large trees and close proximity to water. The route provides excellent opportunities for photography, nature study, and enjoying a quiet walk along one of the state's most important waterways.

Getting There
The Paseo del Rio Trail, also known locally as Fish Hatchery Park, is located along Highway 51 between Truth or Consequences and Elephant Butte Dam. Parking is available near the trailhead, with easy access from downtown Truth or Consequences. The trail is well suited for walking, jogging, and casual recreation.

Hiker Tip
Bring binoculars and take your time. The trail passes through some of the most productive wildlife habitat in Sierra County and is especially rewarding during spring and fall migration. Early morning walks often provide the best wildlife viewing opportunities and cooler temperatures.
