What You'll See
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Elephant Butte Lake, the Rio Grande, and the surrounding desert landscape. Walking paths throughout the Dam Site Recreation Area pass historic cabins, stone terraces, pergolas, stairways, and landscaping constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The area also offers interpretive opportunities focused on the construction of Elephant Butte Dam and the community that grew around it.

The dam itself was completed in 1916 and helped create New Mexico's largest reservoir, making it one of the most significant historic and engineering landmarks in the region.

Getting There
From Truth or Consequences, travel east on U.S. Highway 51 toward Elephant Butte Dam. The scenic overlook and Dam Site Recreation Area are located east of town and are accessible from Highway 51. Parking, restrooms, picnic facilities, and visitor information are available within the historic district.

Hiker Tip
Bring a camera. The Dam Site offers some of the best lake views in Sierra County, especially during sunrise and sunset. Plan extra time to explore the historic CCC structures, overlooks, and interpretive areas scattered throughout the district.
