Percha Dam State Park Trails

The park's trails meander through one of the most significant riparian habitats in New Mexico. Visitors can enjoy towering cottonwoods, willow-lined riverbanks, seasonal wetlands, and peaceful views of the Rio Grande.

Wildlife is abundant throughout the park. Hikers frequently encounter songbirds, woodpeckers, herons, ducks, raptors, rabbits, and other species that rely on the river corridor. During spring and fall migration, the area becomes especially active with migratory birds and other wildlife.

One of the most popular hiking routes is the park's riverside trail, which provides access to both woodland and river habitats while offering excellent opportunities for photography and nature observation.

Getting There
Percha Dam State Park is located approximately 40 miles south of Truth or Consequences near Caballo and Hatch. The park can be accessed from New Mexico Highway 187 via Percha Dam Road. Parking, camping, picnic facilities, and restrooms are available within the park. Entrance fees may apply.

Hiker Tip
Bring binoculars and walk slowly. The trails pass through some of the most productive wildlife habitat along the Rio Grande, and many species are easier to spot when taking time to observe the vegetation, riverbanks, and tree canopy. Early morning is often the best time for both wildlife viewing and comfortable hiking conditions.
