Cairn Loop

What You'll See
The trail passes through classic Chihuahuan Desert terrain featuring rocky washes, volcanic outcrops, desert shrubs, and a variety of cactus species. Hikers can enjoy elevated viewpoints overlooking Elephant Butte Lake, distant mountain ranges, and the surrounding desert basin. Spring visitors may encounter blooming cactus and seasonal wildflowers following favorable moisture conditions.

Getting There
From downtown Truth or Consequences, travel east on U.S. Highway 51 toward Elephant Butte Dam. The trailhead is located approximately 6.5 miles east of town. Look for a small parking area and large boulders on the south side of the road.

Hiker Tip
The trail can occasionally be difficult to follow. Watch for cairns (stacked rocks) and trail markers, and consider downloading an offline trail map before your hike. There is little to no shade along the route, so bring plenty of water and avoid hiking during the hottest part of summer days.
