Yost Escarpment

Located southeast of Truth or Consequences along the historic Jornada del Muerto, the Yost Escarpment Trail follows a well-preserved section of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the historic route that connected Mexico City and Santa Fe for more than 300 years. Today, the area offers visitors an opportunity to experience the same desert landscape traversed by explorers, traders, settlers, and missionaries while enjoying sweeping views of the Jornada Basin and surrounding mountain ranges.

The combination of desert grasslands, shrublands, rocky terrain, and expansive open space supports a variety of bird species adapted to arid environments. The area's remote setting provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

What to Expect
The Yost Escarpment Trail is a relatively easy interpretive hike that leads visitors across the Jornada del Muerto to an elevated escarpment overlooking the historic travel corridor. Along the route, interpretive signs explain the challenges faced by travelers crossing one of the most difficult sections of El Camino Real.

Visitors can expect open desert landscapes, native grasslands, volcanic geology, and panoramic views stretching across the basin. Birding opportunities are best along washes, grasslands, and rocky slopes where desert species are often active.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May)
Comfortable temperatures and migrating birds make spring one of the most enjoyable times to explore the trail. Wildflowers may be present following winter moisture.

Summer (June-August)
Early morning visits are recommended due to high desert temperatures. Resident desert birds remain active throughout the season.

Fall (September-November)
Cooler temperatures and excellent visibility create ideal hiking and birding conditions.

Winter (December-February)
Winter can provide excellent opportunities to observe grassland birds and hunting raptors, often beneath clear desert skies.

Best Time of Day
Early morning offers the coolest temperatures, the best lighting for photography, and the highest levels of bird activity. Late afternoon can also be productive for observing soaring raptors and enjoying expansive desert views.

Getting There
The Yost Escarpment Trail is located southeast of Truth or Consequences along Sierra County Road A013 (Upham Road). The trailhead is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and includes interpretive exhibits related to El Camino Real and the Jornada del Muerto. Visitors should bring water, wear sun protection, and be prepared for remote desert conditions, as services are not available at the site.

Birding Tip
Bring binoculars and take time to stop at elevated viewpoints along the trail. The open landscape makes it easier to spot soaring raptors, ravens, and other birds moving across the Jornada del Muerto, while the historic setting provides a unique connection to one of the most important travel routes in New Mexico history.
