What You'll See
The trail crosses open desert terrain before ascending to an overlook above the historic route of El Camino Real. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the challenges faced by travelers crossing the Jornada del Muerto, one of the most difficult stretches of the historic trade route between Mexico City and Santa Fe.

From the escarpment, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Jornada Basin, surrounding mountain ranges, and the route once used by thousands of wagons, livestock, and travelers. The area also provides excellent opportunities to observe desert plants, geological features, and native wildlife.

Getting There
The Yost Escarpment Trail is located southeast of Truth or Consequences along Sierra County Road A013 (Upham Road). The trailhead includes interpretive exhibits, parking, and access to the Bureau of Land Management-managed trail system associated with El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail.

Hiker Tip
Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. The trail offers little shade, and summer temperatures can be extreme.
